Stephen Swartz

Retired General Counsel, Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust

Stephen W. Swartz spent 18+ years as general counsel of the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust based in Washington, D.C., before stepping down in 2018. He was also a senior attorney for the Trust’s parent organization, concentrating on broader real estate, risk management, and litigation issues before retiring in 2020. Prior to joining the land trust in 1999, he was in private practice for nearly 20 years concentrating in the areas of real estate law and governmental regulation with particular emphasis on litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution. He now serves as a pro bono adviser to a variety of nonprofits in the greater Washington, D.C. area, and recently stepped down as president and board chair of the Charles Koiner Conservancy for Urban Farming in suburban Maryland.  Steve is an alumnus of the Land Trust Accreditation Commission and the Land Trust Alliance’s Conservation Defense Advisory Council, a volunteer on other Alliance projects, and is a frequent presenter on conservation topics. 

Steve is admitted in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
